3 Step Method to Grow at Your Workplace
I’m about to share a simple method to grow in your corporate career. I used this method as a fresher which helped me grow periodically. When I was quitting my corporate journey to serve a bigger purpose, I was leading the Training and L&D Department. Now, let me share with you what I followed to grow myself to higher positions.
Everybody WANTS to grow, and everybody CAN grow. Since the time I started to work at the age of 17, I follow a simple method to grow. It has always worked for me. I started as an entry-level sales representative to leading companies today.
Don’t let the simplicity of it knock your belief out.
Here is how I do it and am sharing it with you:
1. Do Excellent: Learn continuously to your best each day and strive to do better the next day, on the job you are at now – call it Excellency. Excellence is a habit, so discipline yourself to deliver excellence consistently. You got to be an expert in what you do, especially if you are in the lower ranks and looking to grow in the same vertical. Being highly competent puts you on the top list of performance and brings recognition.
Even if you think you are not going to be at this job or company for long, do what you do with your best. Remember it’s a habit you have to build. Your results will be equal to your habits.
2. Decide your next Goal: Identify your next desired profile/job function or designation. We shouldn’t grow blindly or by others’ will. You have to be intentional about your growth.
When I was a banking rep with IBM, I put my eyes to becoming a Trainer, because I loved teaching people. I saw people do things in a way that got them stuck, and I enjoyed teaching them and seeing them fair well. Keeping your eyes towards what’s next is a powerful state of mind, it draws all your attention to manifest it. Of course, the goals keep going higher after each achievement.
3. Prepare and become your Goal: Once you set a goal, continue to do the best in your current role, while you do that, begin to observe the personality (knowledge, skills, and attitude) required for your next desired role. Learn, network with the folks in that role, constantly look for opportunities. Magnetize all qualities required. The moment you develop the qualities that nearly match my next Goal.
Boom, like that, you’ll soon be promoted or offered opportunities.
“You don’t become a Manager by getting a position, you get a position the moment your persona becomes that of a Manager.”
You might contemplate this by looking at a few people who got to higher positions otherwise: a recommendation, based on tenure or by some influence. If you watch them closely, they wouldn’t be anywhere close to best in such function. They just hang in there in mediocrity. So don’t let such things bother you. Focus on your growth, your scope is high.
You must be glad to read this simple and effective method I followed. I trust it will help you and others in your network. Share it if you feel alike.
Let me know what growth working method you follow?
And If you don’t have one, I mean an intentional self-imposed grow method, feel free to adopt what I shared. Trust me, it helps.
To your success!
